Pablo Pineda - Movie 'Me too'
Sundance Film Festival movie 'Me Too' introduces a lead character with Down Syndrome
Pablo Pineda.
He's smart. He's a college graduate. He's employed. And he was born with an extra 21st chromosome. Daniel has Down Syndrome and is one of the main characters of the film 'Me too (Yo Tambien)', scheduled for screening at the 2010 Sundance Film Festival in Park City, Utah January 21st-31st.
Set in Seville Spain, 'Me too' is a love story between co-workers Daniel and Laura. Friendship develops and love blooms as they face the reactions of their community and, as in any true love story - persevere. English subtitles accompany the original Spanish-speaking film. (Please note: the film rating is not listed but it is probably not a family-friendly movie).
Billed as a "typical romantic comedy" with a twist 'Me Too' will undoubtedly explore the complexities faced by any couple with different life circumstances. It seems as though, at least on the surface, Director/Writer team Álvaro Pastor & Antonio Naharro treat Daniel as just another man, in love with a woman, facing obstacles. How accurate this assumption is remains to be seen as the first screening is scheduled for Tuesday, January 26th at 9:00 pm at The Egyptian Theater in Park City.
This is one to watch for and could be another milestone in presenting a character with different abilities as a dynamic, contributing part of society, and worthy of leading man status.
Kelly Williams, the Film Program Director for the Austin Film Festival was thrilled to find this movie on the Sundance listings and is hoping to catch a screening while he is at the festival next week.
"The photo from this film grabbed me and I immediately felt drawn to see it", Williams reported. Williams' interest is clearly piqued, "I am curious to see if this film will properly reflect what I have experienced in growing up with friends who have Down Syndrome."
Williams stated that the Austin Film Festival has screened similar movies in the past with great success. "We filled the Paramount Theater with a screening of 'The Ringer' in 2005'," says Williams. 'The Ringer' is a comedy film set during a Special Olympics competition. This film had the endorsement of the Special Olympics but national reviews and reactions were mixed.
Williams and the AFF have organized a showing of the HBO original movie, 'Temple Grandin' (sub titled: Autism Gave her a Vision, She Gave it a Voice) for Austin on Feb. 4th, 2010 and will continue to screen and honor quality films that present characters with different abilities.
